I suppose being only 5 or 6 weeks into the new year that this is as good of time as any to start to discuss what I am up to and what I am planning for this year.
I am still trying not to look at 2013 with a twinge of failure. I keep trying to look at it as maybe not PR'ing in time but I accomplished so much in terms of distance. And, I learned a lot about how to train properly. But of course being as hard as I am on myself it is disappointing to know that I am just not where I want to be in terms of running.
Which leads me to my goals for Spring. Basically - there are NO goals as far as PR's and times. I have no intention of running anything more than half marathon distance in the first half of the year. And, I am not entirely convinced I will run one in the fall. After running 3 fulls and an ultra last year - and in the process losing a lot of fitness (I know that sounds weird but bear with my thinking here) I want to focus on getting that back.
I want to get back to where I was at the end of 2012. I feel that the second I started to focus on the full that I lost all that I had worked hard to gain in the half distance. Speed went out the window and even as I trained for the fall and my sub 4 goal I never felt fully confident in the speed. I am also over the weight that I was back then. Not by much but by enough to know that yes it probably does make a difference; so there is that as well that I am working on (kind of sort of as in don't have wings and beer night more than once a week. don't judge).
I took a pretty good amount of time off from really running. And I am still not at the point where I am logging a lot of miles. I am 100% easing back into it all. For a while I did a ton of Flywheel classes and cross training. A few weeks back Les Mill's Body Pump came to NYSC and I have been consistently taking 3 classes a week since it launched. I am feeling stronger which is a great feeling. I miss feeling strong. Then I have been doing cross training and running a few times a week. No crazy mileage yet though. I did a "long" run last weekend of 7 miles. Weird to call that long when I was doing 10-12 as my mid week run during marathon training but that is where I am at.
Now, I am running some races in the beginning of this year...I got into the NYC Half during the second lottery round, the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile as well as the Brooklyn Half Marathon. So yes I am preparing for that distance. But, I do not have a single time goal for any. I am not prepared to PR by any means (1:53 for the half) and there is no pressure to. NYC Half should be an amazing experience and Brooklyn Half was one of my favorite races last spring. Also a few other shorter NYRR races have hit the calendar this week in a registration blitz. Oops.
I have skipped a planned run if I didn't feel like it, and am actually enjoying the ones that I am doing. I want to not rush myself into shape and then just not enjoy it. I was so over running at the end of the year and that sucked. I want to WANT to run. I want to LOVE the run.
So there we have it. That is what I have been up to lately. Spring equals rebuilding for me. No pressure. Just build back up and have a little bit of fun with it. I think the second I started to put so much pressure on myself to perform was the second I started to fail. I remember having this idea of going "sub 2" for the half marathon in the fall of 2012 - and then proceeded to run a 1:54 without having obsessively geared every run to pace and effort and structure. I ran. And because I ran blindly I think that is where the success was. I am not going to throw away all I learned about tempos, intervals, ladder, pyramid etc workouts but I am going to relax myself for a while. I don't expect much in terms of performance but I would like to end spring feeling strong and confident again.
Now if only it would warm up and de-ice outside - I would really like to hit the pavement (even though I honestly don't hate the treadmill).
From obese to ultra marathoner, and not letting ulcerative colitis get in the way of my passion. Obsessed with running and all things sweaty. Welcome to a little bit of my life.

Oakley Mini 10K: Recap
I don't think that I have ever prayed so hard for rain on the weekend as I was on Friday night.
I legit did not feel like running this race.
For some reason all Friday my stomach was just OFF. I was bloated and it was rumbly and the last thing on my mind was trying to race a 10K - potentially in the rain, in Central Park, on Saturday morning.
I didn't pick up my number ahead of time and left things with my friend who was driving in that she would text me in the morning and I would let her know if I was in or not.
Insert Saturday morning wake up. To birds chirping and sunshine. I actually cursed a little bit. I couldn't say no. I was not feeling that fantastic but couldn't justify not going in...especially when I knew I would run at some point regardless Saturday. Mine as well be in a race I had paid for and worked towards 9 + 1.
And do it in neon style.
Obviously.
Sigh. If not excited to run at least get excited for a new outfit! Pretty much story of my life. New outfits get me out of bed in the morning. My body thanks me, my bank account hates me.
Can I get an amen for driving in versus public transportation from Hoboken? I was picked up around 6:40 and we were in in 20 minutes, with numbers picked up and gear checked bathroom done by 7:30. I have never had so much leisure time before a race.
My stomach still didn't feel great so I hung near the bathrooms as long as I could before making our way to the starting line about 10 minutes before we were to be off.
All I can say is WOW. This race was BIG.
View in the front.
View from behind. And let's just say I was happy to be in a front corral! Holy women.
After announcing the elites and a such, 8:00am and we were off!
Originally I had totally planned to race this sh*t out of this. Off the bat I knew that I would push but it wasn't going to be pretty.
My stomach was iffy and my right calf was so so tight.
I just choose to start at a pace that was sustainable, but be able to push. Not crash and burn.
Mile 1: 8:57
It was so cool starting this race in the street instead of in the park. Last year I started this race solo since I was in the bathroom for the gun to go off, so I was all sorts of disoriented beginning. I literally ran solo until at least mile 1.5 last year! This year I was just focusing on trying to get in a groove and enjoying the spectators.
Mile 2: 8:44
Stomach was hurting and so was my calf but this was feeling like a good pace. We were into the park now and seeing Jen was a huge burst of energy!!!! So nice to see a familiar face out there cheering! I was also already sweating buckets. WTF. Also I remembered yet again just how much I hate running the park this way. Give me Harlem hill any day. At least it ends. Making your way up the west side just seems interminable.
Mile 3: 9:06
The hills were really killing my calf. And also my right glute. It felt like a pulling sensation. Not good. I made the executive decision to walk some of the bigger portions of hill. A quick walk was better than running for absolutely no reason and potentially hurting for real. Whether just tight or what I wasn't about to risk it. Also insert me almost killing a woman. I was walking and she with a lot of pep goes "you are almost there it will all be downhill from here!".
Okay I love the encouragement but has she ever run Central Park before...I just smiled like oh yes why thanks for the guidance. Yippee no more hills after 2.5 miles! Moron.
Mile 4: 9:35
There was a bit of walking and a bit of thirst. But while I was okay with walking uphills, I didn't feel like stopping for a bathroom...and was pretty sure that water would have me running for one. I was actually scared for a bit with the running because it was really hurting.
Mile 5: 9:36
Well at least my walking inserts were pretty steady. I was actually walking and stretching out my calf. SO gosh darn tight. This race was really putting forth a solid argument for stretching and foam rolling, I will tell you that. I got a little infusion of pep seeing my friends boyfriend - who was running a loop going in the opposite direction. He yelled out for me I got wayyyy excited. I love people cheering!!
Mile 6: 8:51
All I have to say is I was FINALLY warmed up. And now was at the point of wanting to run forever. And was trying to keep my pace down. My legs were tired but they also felt ready to run. Only took them the whole race. Way to show up guys.
Mile 7: 8:07
I was just gunning for the finish at this point. I saw I was going to PR (and couldn't really do the mental math until mile 6 to be honest) and wanted to just bust it out and finish strong. I was pretty surprised I was taking a decent chunk of time - over a minute - off even with the walking and stretching and hills (last PR was from a flat course a month ago).
Official time: 57:08
Overall, not too bad. And I didn't over run the course THAT bad! I had wanted to PR and based on it all should be running a 10K way faster, but the cards didn't all fall in line for this race between not feeling well and the soreness but fitness is improving even on tired not so recovered legs (I may or may not have run all week including 7 miles on Thursday...and a squat day Friday...typical). I swear I can see myself busting out a few minutes faster under more "ideal" conditions.
The next 10K up is Queens. It was 80+ at the start last year and my slowest per mile race pretty much ever - but if it isn't deadly I will probably see what I can do! So I have a month to work on this.
I was happy I went in for this and didn't bail I would have been really sad had I skipped out. It was absolutely gorgeous in the park on Saturday and the race is a lot of fun.
Also, I need to figure out how to "race" a 10K. I think it is going to involve an actual "warm up" and not just going into the race cold. But it really is a distance that is lost on me strategy wise.
Any insight on this would be more than helpful.
Did you race this weekend? How did it go? Turned out to be such a lovely weekend after all!

Happy April + Sugar Detox
It's April! Happy April Fools Day - and it really feels like Spring out there today. That equals happiness for me.
This week I am taking part in Laura's sugar detox challenge.
In general I don't have a sweet tooth, but there is a lot of added (and often unnoticed) sugar to a lot of "healthy" things that I consume daily.
For instance, I often buy sweetened almond milk, protein bars, protein powders, nut butters, dried fruits, gels and gu's and greek yogurts to name a few and some have alarming sugar quantities.
And, I am a big abuser of "fake" sugar substitutes. Me and stevia are BFF.
It is no secret that I have been having rampant stomach issues lately and think that this could possibly help. If for nothing else - it cannot HURT me any more to see what happens.
More on workout recap and training plans for this week later on.
Hope everyone is enjoying a lovely Monday - I know I had a little extra spring (hehe) in my step this morning since it was absolutely gorgeous!
And don't fall prey to any April Fool's pranks!

13.1 New York Goals
FINALLY! Real racing begins this weekend. I don't count my 5K a couple weeks ago as "real" racing, even though I won a trophy and all.
That was fun, but the torture that is a 5K and all is not something that I look forward to on my racing schedule.
This weekend the fun begins!
This weekend however I am running the Allstate Life Insurance 13.1 New York. This is the race that started it all, and will be my third year running. It is a fun race and will probably continue to run it for sentimental reasons.
If I wasn't already iffy about my ability to PR tomorrow, I would like to thank NYCRuns for the extra vote of confidence (in today's racing email):
13,1 New York 3/23 - Flushing Meadows Park wasn't created for a half-marathon, but that's part of the fun at this annual 13.1-series event in Queens. The sharp turns and loops make the Allstate 13.1 uniquely challenging. Not a PR course, but definitely one of the most interesting! As with all of races in the 13.1 series, this one will feature a 5K as well.
Womp, womp.
While we are on the topic let's discuss what my goals are for this race:
First I suppose let's discuss workouts. I did 3 runs and my final run on Wednesday was a 30 minute tempo and let's just say my legs felt heavy and I was breathing heavy. HM goal pace was not feeling the best. Always a confidence booster when trying to run for 15 minutes at goal pace feels awful.
I kind of failed on rest days. Sure I didn't run - but I did an hour on the elliptical yesterday and some elliptical plus an hour on the bike this morning. Oops.
My foot is feeling SLIGHTLY better, but it's still sore. However pain is pain. It's probably going to be bothersome whether my pace is easy or all out so I mean mine as well go all out to get it done faster, right?
And then we have my stomach. I haven't made it through a run over 4 miles in about a month without a bathroom break. I am fine with stopping just hoping if I have to it just happens right off the bat so I can get on with it. And I know I've mentioned but funny enough my PR from November is with a bathroom break. Sheesh I was speedier. Time to lay off the carbs.
But all in all, I am looking forward to racing. I know whatever happens I will have a good time. I have a pretty tough race calendar this spring and just am looking forward to kicking things off!

- A Goal: PR which means anything under 1:53:14 for me. I may be laughing at that.
- B Goal: Under 2:00
- C Goal: Under 2:07 (last years course time)

Spring?
Happy Wednesday and Happy SPRING!
Someone should send a memo to Mother Nature on that one because the frigid temperature with gusting winds on my commute to work this morning were not feeling very "spring" to me. I am ready for no jackets kind of weather. The weather that we got a preview of last week for ohhhh about a day
I am the person that will ditch the jacket the SECOND it becomes acceptable. Or even not acceptable, just where I won't absolutely freeze my behind off walking outside for 10-15 minutes without.
Was I the only one super annoyed to leave work on Monday evening only to be greeted by this scene:
As pretty as it can be I am more than ready to say so long to the snow and hello to sunshine!
Not to mention my shoe choice left a lot to be desired in this weather:
I woke up Tuesday morning to an icy slushy mess of a situation.
I was slipping and sliding my way to the gym. Running outside was not even an option. Apparently people decided that that the expected snowfall was going to be minimal enough that salting was unnecessary.
I am ready to wake up and actually see sunshine. Or at least for the sun to be out when I am ending my workout because it still being dark is totally unacceptable.
Although this morning I was getting a glimpse of the beginning of a beautiful sunrise as I walked my way home after my run. The colors were definitely going to be gorgeous I wish I had been running on the waterfront!
I am stalking the weather for my race Saturday and the high right now is 47. I am happy that at least the race begins later at 9:00am so hopefully it is warming up a bit. Haven't 100% decided if I am going the pants or skirt route yet though. It's more about the fashion/color options than the comfort here; let me be real about that. Once I decide on my top the rest will follow (the serious side of running folks).
If by some miracle the weather changes in the next couple days and the projected high is in the 50's this girl will not complain one little bit!
So hope everyone is enjoying the week and the official start of SPRING!
And also I need to bottle up my discontent with the cold for when I am cursing waking up at 4am on the weekends to get my 20 milers out of the way before the sun gets too hot. But I keep telling myself I would rather be dealing with excessive heat and humidity than the cold!

Spring Race Schedule: Updated
A little something has happened since I last spoke of my 2013 Goals and Races.
THIS happened?!
The other day my running buddy sent me over a picture of her year in racing planned out so that we can coordinate.
Now she is a little more crazy than myself in terms of the load she takes on (as if that was possible...) since she will be doing Tough Mudders and dipping into Tri's...with a 1/2 Iron Man planned (can you see how we are destined to be running besties - go big all the way baby!). I am sticking with just the running for now as I plan on hitting some Ultra's this year and am focusing on improving my running speed and endurance.
That lead me to think about how I've on the whim signed up for a couple "other" races recently and well perhaps I should write that out.
Glad I did.
Anyone else notice as of 4/7 I have a race every weekend.
All I can say is please say a prayer for me that I make it through May alive. If I am still standding come May 27th I am giving myself a gold star.
Starting this weekend spring racing commences. And obviously this weekend is a 5K that I was given a free entry for so I can't complain too much - it will be my first time playing on the trails and it's a baby race...I am mostly concerned with my tendency to trip over my own two feet and how that will play out on the trails.
So I'm not sure if this is an epic fail or an epic win.
On one hand. I LOVE TO RACE.
On the other, in terms of hitting new PR's and such I am not sure how it is going to play out.
I am pretty confident that I can PR the full marathon. But not sure about the half (an update on that training to come...) And the Ultra is more for "fun" than time. So I think that I should be alright.
Only time will tell just how crazy I am.
YAY for running!
Anyone else out there do this - race a lot of weekends back to back? I did this in the fall with 6 (I think) half marathons. I PR'd the first and last and ran the middle one's more for enjoyment than time.

Here I Am!
Damn. Life has been straight up busy. It feels like it was just yesterday that I wrote my last post but it was over a week ago.
The good news is, I am alive!
But what a couple of weeks it has been.
It has been hard, mostly on a personal front, I have a lot that has happened and a lot of challenges have been presented and I just didn't have too much to report nor is this fun little fitness blog the outlet for those (at least at the moment while it is all happening) so I just had to step away.
I just needed to break from social media for a bit. I haven't been on instagram or facebook much and am still yet to start up with twitter! But I'm back now!
I returned from Indianapolis late Monday night (thank you very much planes not showing up and flight delays...)
While my last post was discussing the challenges I faced trying to get in my training while I was working 12 hour days and at dinners/late nights each night.
I am happy to report I somehow still managed to get in a 30 mile week.
It was a matter of grabbing runs when I could. Meant a lot of speedier short runs and lacked a long run, but running was just the name of the game. If I had a break for an hour I was going to run 3 miles shower up and get back to work. I didn't sleep a lot and was the most shocked that I did not wind up sick by the end lasting on 4 hours of sleep most of the time.
I got back on Monday night and even though I didn't get to bed until after 1am (I am stickler for unpacking and doing laundry right away, thank you type A) I was up and in the gym at 5:30 to get back to business as usual Tuesday morning.
I managed to get in some great workouts and with some juggling got my schedule to "normal":
Monday - rest day
Tuesday - 4 miles morning / 6 miles night
Wednesday - lifting morning / 6 miles night
Thursday - full body lift morning
Friday - 4.5 miles morning
Normalcy feels great when it comes to my workouts. When I am unable to stick to my schedule I just don't feel "right". I am such a schedule person.
I am also happy that the weather seems to be warming up some so I can probably start ditching the treadmill more! Woo! This cold weather wuss can't wait.
So there we have it. I have lots to report and other things to discuss on the running front but for now I am happy that I am home, have a day off (it's been 2 weeks without!) and can just rest up a little bit.
Oh and HAPPY MARCH! We are inching our way closer and closer to Spring and I for one am ecstatic about that!
The good news is, I am alive!
