Hello there! My ever exciting training recaps that I haven't posted in a couple weeks.
The past week and a half or so have been just ugh. I have a cold that just won't quit (although it seems it finally might be tapering off!) and having some Crohn's symptoms which is starting to give me anxiety. I am going next Monday for a sigmoidoscopy (yay for not having to have a full colonoscopy yet) and hoping to get some answers.
I am trying to be all zen about shit at the moment (since stress usually makes symptoms worse) but my half marathon is in a couple of weeks and the fact that I feel less than ideal is effing with my head (and no bathrooms on the course, yay!). My GI doc who moved to a different practice reduced my Remicade dosage without consulting my new doc at the practice and I am just thinking it was a dumb move and might be reaping the results of that now.
Anyway, stay zen about it, right? And, trying to ignore the crappy string of runs I have had.
Things I am enjoying? The FitBit Charge HR I got for Valentine's day! Love love love having the heart rate. The bf definitely was listening to me complaining about how my Garmin vivofit didn't have it!

Two more weeks of long runs before the half. I would really love to have a good one after how meh running has been the past week.
From obese to ultra marathoner, and not letting ulcerative colitis get in the way of my passion. Obsessed with running and all things sweaty. Welcome to a little bit of my life.

Half Marathon Training 2/1/16 - 2/7/16
Another week down.
I did most of my runs outside! Yay! This girl who hates winter is really loving winter running. Minus this week. The highs coming up this weekend will most likely put me on the treadmill. I just can't with highs hovering around 20. No. Plus ice. I had to do speedwork today and hit the treadmill since I would have wiped out.
I went to use my Garmin to run with that and mapmyrun simultaneously to find it dead. Then the next day it wouldn't pick up satellite and I was too anxious to run so just said f the comparison for now. But splits below are from mapmyrun data and still untrustworthy. I mean look at Sundays run? Yes I was running too fast for an easy run because I was breathing hard and just trying to get it over with but those paces are not paces I run!
I don't mind much I just know that it is false data and feel like I shouldn't be promoting that I am actually running those paces if that makes sense. If people use it as a serious tool to gauge progress for a goal race I feel bad for how inaccurate it is!
Week of 1/31/16
Monday - 4.58 miles - 42:12 9:12 avg
Tuesday - 1 mile to/from the gym - pace run 4.25 miles 36:00 8:28 pace
Wednesday - morning - hit the spin bike for 45 mins with upper body weights. In the evening - Pace 4 Success "beach booty" class 30 mins of glute/leg work (incredibly sore the next day!)
Thursday - 6.73 miles 54:23 8:04 pace Splits: 8:17, 9:01, 8:43, 6:53, 9:09, 9:03, 7:44 (.78) - that 6:53 is definitely wrong (mapmyrun) but a good tempo on sore legs!
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Long run - "11.08 miles 1:42:39 pace 9:15 Felt pretty damn good. Weather is perfection for running. Fast finish at HM pace.
Splits: 9:27, 9:34, 9:14, 9:37, 8:50, 10:01, 9:51, 9:42, 9:37, 8:34, 8:38
Sunday - 4.08 miles 31:22 pace 7:41 All lies. Mapmyrun I wish I was this speedy.
Splits: 7:59, 7:26, 7:21, 8:03
Total miles: 31.72
Happy that I cut back to 5 days of running and added back in that cross train day - and still came out around the same mileage as with 6 days of running. Also a couple solid strength workouts. I need to do a review on Pace for Success but adding a couple of their classes a week will force me to strenght train. Plus they have 30 minute ones which are SO doable.

I Just Want to Run ALL the Miles
It has been no secret that I have been on the struggle bus trying to get my Crohn's into remission.
While I learned last Monday we still are not there (and still waiting on some labs on if we are changing treatment - but that is for a different day) I can say I feel SO much better.
It is actually hard to know I am not in remission considering how I feel - which only means - I will feel even BETTER once we get it handled, right? Logical assumption?
But anyways. The point is, my running has gotten pretty glorious.
I am running sub 10 minute miles easily - when in June I was hovering in the 11+ territory most times and also running to the bathroom every 2-3 miles.
Now, I can count on one hand the runs interrupted with bathroom breaks and both occasions were due to me being an asshole with food choices.
I don't think I will ever be able to consume sugar and feel well (one was induced by a jelly bean binge, wah) but I will be a-okay knowing a trigger and not being a jerk.
Last week culminated the end of a very happy month of running.
I realized after a short run yesterday turned into an 11 miler that I finished off the week with 46 miles! And, no rest days. Oops.
I was progressing so nicely and cautiously then BOOM 33 miles to 46 miles...that's not a 10% increase, is it?
But I've had plenty of rest days.
My legs are feeling amaaaazing and you know what, I am just going to run with it!
As I may have done on another attempt at a short run today which turned into 7.5 miles...
But THE most exciting part is that I FINALLY ventured outside.
I was in Montauk and woke up Saturday planning to just walk for a while because it was to be my rest day - and then just got caught in the moment of the scenery, the beautiful morning and ran.
6 awesome, insanely happy, miles. You can understand my inspiration here:
And you know what, I was FINE. Stomach was a-okay. I survived.
This is a bit cheesy but it was an emotional moment for me. I have been so terrified of running outside and then conversely terrified that I would never be able again to summon the nerve that I teared up at the end.
For some perspective it was my first significant run outside since NYCM and my flare going nuts. I have run to and from the gym a bit but have been scared to lace up and go.
On top of that it was hot and a bit humid and I was without much effort running 9:30 - 10ish pace - I had no expectations of where I would be after so much treadmill running so was pleasantly surprised.
There is hope after all. I am feeling more and more like my old self with every passing day and I just want to hold on to this and take advantage.
Having been stripped of my health for such a long period of time and I am just embracing this. And if that means running every day because I feel well enough to and I want to - then bet your ass you will find me running.
I've missed this and am hoping it is here to stay.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 17
Umm marathon week!
I will probably do another post so this is just a quick little recap.
Still tapering. Things were going well until they weren't. Wound up sick and bed ridden. Womp womp. My anxiety level about this though was really more feeling lazy than missing runs would derail me by the marathon.
When I had my DNF at Hartford last year (which I was supposed to taper down from before NYCM) my mileage was all sorts of wonky leading up to NYCM and I ran a 4:29 - with no hill training, while sick!
I know my body is ready for the mileage. I just want to fly to Chicago and hit that start line healthy. That is all.

Monday - Cross Train! Arc 30 min / AMT 30 mins
Tuesday - 4.22 miles @ 9:28
Wednesday - 3.15 miles @ 9:31
Thursday - 3.2 miles @ 9:22
Friday - This was my planned rest day. I was going to run because I had a wedding that night and rest Saturday but I felt like shit. I somehow thought that I would feel better Saturday after being up all hours and drunk. Spoiler alert - did not happen.
Saturday - I wanted to die. Hungover. Fever. Got home at 10:30am from the wedding and got out of bed 3 times the entire day.
Sunday - I WILL RUN. JK. I will not run.
Total Miles: 10.57 miles. Sigh.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 16
We are in the taper folks! This week brought a reduction in mileage as well as me being sick. I have just been feeling run down and Thursday and Friday was home from work attempting to rest up.
I think it is just work + marathon training + busy social calendar catching up with me finally.
Sadly, I have craziness coming up. A wedding this weekend, then Chicago, then a trip to Boston, then another wedding I am in and finally NYCM.
Life ain't slowing down any time in the near future.

And here was last week's training:
Monday - 5 miles @ 10:05 - I was surprised my legs felt pretty good after the 20 on Sunday
Tuesday - Cross Train - 75 minutes on the AMT.
Wednesday - 7 miles @ 10:51 - I was feeling shitty and kept this sucker slow.
Thursday - Home sick and got a guilty conscience that I needed to work out. I was smart enough to not run but umm then I decided to do about 60 mins of HIIT. I did this video from Blogilates a few times and then added in another half hour of a HIIT circuit I put together. Dripping sweaty mess in the privacy of my own home. But during the video who knew 50 seconds could seem so.long.
Friday - Full rest day. I was home sick again and made myself actually REST.
Saturday - I took a barre class then ran 7 miles @ 9:41 - I am LOVING barre. I am kind of ready to be out of marathon mode and really tone it up. Barre will be making a frequent appearance in my workout rotation.
Sunday - Bronx 10 Mile + extra. Planned to hit at least 12 but work emergency = me fielding calls while running and throwing in the towel once it finished (but yay negative splits!!) Splits: 10:01, 9:34, 10:20, 10:10, 9:50, 10:16, 10:06, 9.48, 9:46, 9:43, 9:30
Buns were on fire - Bronx is NOT flat. Don't take barre classes the day before a long run. Noted.
Total Miles: 30 miles - I missed one run - had planned to hit the mid 30's but I was better off having 4 days of running considering how I felt.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 15
And just like that folks...we are tapering. I completed my final long long run after a stupid crazy Saturday which included a 5K, trapeze class and bachelorette party...and couldn't be happier that I will not be running anything over 2 1/2 hours until the marathon!
I should probably PLAN my taper more but I just know what my long runs look like. I will reduce most likely 80% of my max week total this week. So mileage goal is in the mid 30's this week, probably down to 30 next and 2-3 runs the week of the marathon to shake out.
I feel confident in the mileage and way my body is responding (aka I am treating it like shit in recovery and it is bouncing back just fine) but have no clue about pace come race day. I am pretty okay with that to be honest. Whatever happens, happens. I am not going to go in trying to hit any pace. I am going to see how my body feels that day and the goal is to give it all I've got - this marathon I don't want to finish feeling like I could have given more. NYC and Space Coast absolutely but not Chicago.

Monday - Cross Train - 60 minutes of boredom on the Arc.
Tuesday - 8.1 miles for the day - double. Morning - 5.1 miles @ 9:15 / Evening 3 miles @ 10:20
Wednesday - 5 miles @ 9:11 - mostly easy with 1-3 min pickups at 5K pace throughout
Thursday - 6 miles @ 10:05 - my legs were pretty trashed at this point and ready to rest! It is good to feel like you have EARNED the rest day.
Friday - Rest Day! The only workout that took place was lifting wine glass to mouth.
Saturday - 5 miles total - 1 mile w/u 5K (27:32 - 8:53 pace) 1 mile c/d
Sunday - 20 miles @ 10:45 (guesstimate) Garmin died and still to come to life. I ran some, then ran a half marathon, then ran some more. It was humid and hot as a mofo, I was tired as a mofo, and never been more excited to be entering into taper in my life. Okay, exaggeration but staring at 13-14 on tap for this weekend seems like a walk in the park!
Total Miles: 44.1 miles for the week! holla!

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 14
All week long I had total apprehension about the long run scheduled.
20 miles loomed over my head.
Even morning of the temptation to just stay in bed was oh, so, great. But I did it! 3+ loops of Central Park and the confidence has been built back up. I felt pretty strong the entire time. Recovery wise I have a little soreness (but you know, those hills + a mile race on Saturday kind of call for it regardless your conditioning I believe) but a nice boost. I was tempted to give up at 18 but had to run a couple more miles to get to the south side of the park anyway so, I ran. Bagel and apple in hand post race.
One more week of a crazy long run (18- 22 depending on how I am feeling) and then it is time to taper taper taper away!

Monday - 3.17 @ 9:27 - nothing special just a shake out from going long Sunday
Tuesday - 10 miles total - Double Day! Morning: 1.5 mile w/u 8 x 400 avg 1:57 with 400 @ 10:00 recoveries .5 mile c/d
I was inspired to do speed work out of run boredom. I feel I had more in me but I was honestly feeling kind of crappy. Was on the cusp of a sick day. But then I want to workout and if I can get up for that I can go to work.
Was feeling better at night - go figure so ran easy again (and had to kill time before an 8pm massage in the city) 4 miles @ 10:23
Wednesday - Day. Of. Rest. did some weights but other than that I took rest day seriously
Thursday - 6.6 miles total. Another day of doubles. Morning: 4.1 miles @ 9:05 - 5 min w/u 2-3 mins hard / 1 easy Evening: 2.5 miles @ 10:04 - easy miles before 20 minutes of lifting. Woo hoo a tiny bit of strength. I am so slacking on this.
Friday - Cross train - 60 minutes mostly zoning out on the Arc - resistance 30 - 55
Saturday - 5.5 miles - Had the NYRR 5th Ave Mile on tap. I had no idea what to expect - ran there as a warm up and home as my cool down. Ran the mile in 7:22 - I am happy enough with that considering. I shouldn't expect to be any speedier since I don't work on it THAT much.
Sunday - 20 miles @ 10:11 - NYRR 18 Mile Tune Up - I woke up sore from the race Saturday, tired and unmotivated. Surprised once I started running how amazing it went. Never pushed kept it easy and on 3+ loops of CP hills that was a confidence booster. Only had gu in the house for fuel and a fun reminder that my stomach and gu do not mix.
Splits: 10:15, 10:20, 10:17, 10:38, 10:27, 10:09, 10:09, 9:55, 10:01, 10:14, 10:07, 9:53, 10:24, 10:12, 9:59, 10:01, 10:22, 9:32, 10:21, 10:13
Total Miles: 45.27 !!!! yup. a pretty big week mileage wise.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 11
I felt very solid this week with training. My long run went very well. As did the recovery from it. I felt amazing the day after. My legs didn't feel heavy and I even managed a 20.5 mile bike ride easily. I feel like that is progress - quicker recovery from the miles. I only ran 4 days but put a lot of miles on the bike (47!!!) and feel the cross training is always beneficial. I have 3 BIG runs left before Chicago and slowly but surely that confidence is getting back up there.
Monday - Cross Train - biked 16.25 miles
Tuesday - 6 miles @ 9:30 + biked 10.25 miles - this run annoyed me. I started out and in the first half mile looked at my Garmin - I was running easy and figured it was like 10+ pace. It was an 8:20 - so what to I do - get in my head tell myself I am not able to run that pace and spend the rest of the time slowing down. Garmin you make me mental some times.
Wednesday - 3.6 miles @ 9:43 - my legs felt like they were weighed down by serious lead.
Thursday - I was going to do Yoga buuuut happy hour won and rest day was a total rest day minus like 15 mins of core in the morning.
Friday - 4.2 miles @ 9:31 my legs were starting to feel a little better but this was a struggle. dare I say treadmill workouts are starting to feel harder than those outdoors now?
Saturday - 16 miles @ 10:30. This run was pretty perfect. I met up with my friend Faith who is a couple miles from me down at the beach. We each ran a mile to meet and then she put us through a dynamic warm up (she is not only a BQ'er multiple times but a running coach) before we continued on. Average pace was right on as well as we negative split the run (thankful she ran my pace!). Stopped twice for the bathroom but stomach wasn't in pain so didn't bother me.

Sunday - cross train - biked 20.5 miles. I need to get a bike up in the city. I am really enjoying biking days - minus my rear end isn't quite so used to so much time in the saddle just yet.
Total miles: 29.8 miles (counting running only)

Hartford Marathon Training Week 16
ONE WEEK.
Okay, actually less than a week, SATURDAY it is finally here.
I am oddly still not stressed about this. To be honest on one hand I doubt my ability for it to happen and on the other I keep visualizing coming in under 4 hours.
Time will tell. Race day I will run my heart out.
So here it is my final week of training...since this week is all easy and shake out runs. Two runs stand between me and another round of 26.2 miles.
Monday: 75 minutes on the spinner - I was actually really happy to not be running, legs were TIRED!
Tuesday: Last HARD workout - Pyramid: 1.5 Mile w/u @ 9:35 / 2 miles - 8:27 / rest .25 @ 10:00 / 1.5 miles @ 8:13 / rest .25 @ 10:00 / 1 mile @ 7:53 / rest .25 @ 10:00 / .5 @ 7:30 / rest .25 @ 10:00 / c/d 2 miles @ 9:30 - I felt phenomenal during this workout!
Wednesday: Morning - 30 min easy elliptical / 30 mins strength - I planned to do my easy run at the gym but had NO energy so saved it until after work - Evening - 6.75 miles: 9:17, 9:24, 9:15, 8:59, 9:18, 8:09, 8:21 (.75) - my legs were DEAD I forgot my Garmin and arm band so had to hold my phone and use mapmyrun - I thought I was barely breaking a 10 min mile and at the end of the run when I checked was shocked at my splits. Oops?
Thursday: 8 Miles with 6x2min and 4x1min surges during run - I did this on the treadmill - kept the pace 9:40-10:00 min with surges between 8 and 8:30 pace. Couldn't wait to be done! Sometimes running slower is harder than running faster...is that just me?
Friday: REST!!!! Seriously becoming a favorite. Why did I never take rest days? #idiot
Saturday: Long Run - 10:00, 9:46, 9:50, 10:09, 10:03, 9:56, 9:47, 9:50, 9:45, 9:42, 9:01 (.13) I was under strict instructions to keep it slow and no problem I wound up having to work so was beat after
Sunday: Easy run - 9:55, 10:01, 10:00, 9:58, 10:04, 9:58 - Oh hey summer and humidity #strugglebus this was not fun but it kept me slooooow - I was DRENCHED!
Total Miles: 40.38
And now this week holds for me lots of stretching and taking it easy.
I am looking forward to it. The taper hasn't really affected me as much this time. Probably because ahhh I am still running 40 miles weeks!
I feel so much stronger with my running but I just am hoping that my legs start to feel more rested. I will be stretching like it is my job. And hopefully keeping off my feet as much as I can when not necessary.
Almost race day.
Bring it. Like whoa.
Okay, actually less than a week, SATURDAY it is finally here.
I am oddly still not stressed about this. To be honest on one hand I doubt my ability for it to happen and on the other I keep visualizing coming in under 4 hours.
